The Captain House Final Reveal, Part 1: Kitchen & Breakfast Nook
I am so excited to share the final reveal of the Captain House project, Part One! This was a dramatic remodel of a home in the charming Sunset Hill neighborhood of Seattle, built in 1904.
The Captain House is a very special project to the KP Spaces team on many levels. We had an amazing client, Julie, who truly loved her home, and put a lot of trust in us to create a unique design that restores so much character that was lost over the years. (Read about our inspiration behind the design here.) And major props to the guys at Gaul Construction, who tackled the challenges that come with a century-old home like pros, and carried out the design flawlessly.
Now, let’s get to the good stuff!
KITCHEN:
Previously the kitchen was dated (think 90’s-style) and closed off from the dining and living rooms. By removing the wall in between these two spaces, not only did it make the whole main level feel more open and spacious, but it also allowed us to design a roomy peninsula which adds more countertop space and functionality to the kitchen.
The highlight of the space is truly the nautical blue kitchen cabinets, painted a fitting Washington Blue by Benjamin Moore, and the moody black leather granite countertops from Pental – both of which work perfectly with our original inspiration, the captain painting, which now lives by the range. We expanded the size of the three windows above the sink, which helps to bring lots of natural light into the space, and makes washing the dishes in this Signature Hardware apron-front sink a breeze!
The original fir hardwoods were refinished in a rich medium brown stain by Rubio Monocoat to complement the cool tones of the kitchen. And as a nod to the interior of a ship, we decided to finish the kitchen walls and range hood in a vertical shiplap, which adds another layer of dimension and interest. We layered in brass details in the cabinet hardware and plumbing fixtures, which coordinate perfectly with the client’s new range from ILVE. That thing is truly a show stopper!
BREAKFAST NOOK:
Just off the kitchen is the new cozy, light-filled breakfast nook (previously the back porch mudroom), lined with these stunning cement floor tiles from Clé Tile. By expanding the opening between the kitchen and the porch, replacing the drafty windows, and moving the location of the back door, we transformed a forgotten back porch into a dreamy breakfast nook. The custom built-in corner banquette and bench cushions make it the perfect spot to curl up with morning coffee.
